Martinez Renewables

Marathon Petroleum converted its former Martinez petroleum refinery into Martinez Renewables, a $1.2 billion renewable-fuels manufacturing complex operated through a 50/50 joint venture with Neste. The facility produces renewable diesel and other renewable fuels from biobased feedstocks including animal fats, soybean oil, and corn oil. Operations began in 2023, and the facility was designed for approximately 730 million gallons of annual renewable-fuels capacity.

Martinez Renewables transformed an existing Bay Area refinery into one of the country’s largest renewable-diesel manufacturing facilities. The project preserved valuable industrial infrastructure while creating large-scale domestic production capacity for lower-carbon transportation fuels serving West Coast markets. AFT records 0 new permanent jobs because official announcements do not disclose a verified net-new operating-jobs figure.

Why it matters

The oil refining & fuels context.

Oil refining and fuels production tracks major U.S. facilities that turn hydrocarbons, renewable feedstocks, or synthetic processes into transport fuels, base oils, and related products. The category includes qualifying refinery investments and fuel-production plants, while excluding extraction, pipelines, terminals, storage, retail infrastructure, and power generation. These projects are capital-intensive industrial systems whose output reaches aviation, freight, manufacturing, and consumer fuel markets.
