Artesia Renewable Diesel Unit

HF Sinclair’s Artesia Renewable Diesel Unit is a $350 million production facility located at the company’s Artesia, New Mexico refinery complex. Originally announced by HollyFrontier, HF Sinclair’s predecessor, the unit was designed to produce approximately 125 million gallons of renewable diesel annually from soybean oil and other renewable feedstocks. The facility includes supporting rail infrastructure and storage tanks and became operational in the second quarter of 2022.

The Artesia project added commercial-scale renewable-diesel manufacturing capacity to an established New Mexico refinery complex. Its integration with existing industrial infrastructure allows HF Sinclair to produce lower-carbon transportation fuel at scale while expanding domestic fuel-manufacturing capacity in the Southwest. AFT records 0 new permanent jobs because official sources do not disclose a verified net-new operating-jobs figure. The $350 million covers only the Artesia RDU and its included rail and storage infrastructure, excluding HF Sinclair’s broader renewables program, the Artesia pretreatment unit, and other RDU projects.

Why it matters

The oil refining & fuels context.

Oil refining and fuels production tracks major U.S. facilities that turn hydrocarbons, renewable feedstocks, or synthetic processes into transport fuels, base oils, and related products. The category includes qualifying refinery investments and fuel-production plants, while excluding extraction, pipelines, terminals, storage, retail infrastructure, and power generation. These projects are capital-intensive industrial systems whose output reaches aviation, freight, manufacturing, and consumer fuel markets.
