Semiconductor fabrication plants, known as fabs, rank among the most capital-intensive industrial facilities ever built—often requiring $10–$30 billion and several years from groundbreaking to initial production. The CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 accelerated a U.S. construction cycle spanning advanced chip fabrication, legacy-node production, semiconductor equipment, packaging, and critical materials. These projects create long-term manufacturing footprints while attracting suppliers, infrastructure investment, and specialized technical work.
