Warren Battery-Cell Plant

Ultium Cells' Warren, Ohio battery-cell plant is a GM and LG Energy Solution joint venture producing large-format pouch cells for GM EVs. The original announcement described an investment of up to $2.3 billion and more than 1,100 new permanent jobs; AFT records the conservative structured figures of $2.3 billion and 1,100 jobs. Production began in August 2022. Later total-workforce figures are not substituted for the original newly announced permanent-job commitment.

Why it matters

The battery manufacturing context.

Battery manufacturing has become one of the largest concentrations of new industrial investment in the United States. A network of cell plants is taking shape across the Midwest and Southeast, connecting automakers, battery producers, critical-material suppliers and energy-storage markets. Federal production incentives have accelerated that build-out, while the next test will be whether announced capacity converts into sustained domestic production.
