Nucor is adding a $425 million galvanizing line at Nucor Steel Berkeley in Huger, South Carolina. The approximately 500,000-ton line will produce wider galvanized sheet for automotive and consumer-durables customers and is expected to create more than 50 permanent jobs. The project remains in commissioning pending a verified operational-start announcement.

Why it matters

The steel context.

American steelmakers are building a new generation of electric-arc-furnace mills alongside expanded sheet, plate, rebar and coating lines. Nucor, U.S. Steel, Cleveland-Cliffs, Steel Dynamics, CMC, BlueScope and Hyundai Steel are adding capacity for automakers, construction and grid infrastructure across the industrial Midwest, Southeast and Southwest.
