Portsmouth Next-Generation Biologics Manufacturing Expansion

Lonza announced a CHF 200 million Portsmouth expansion, contemporaneously reported as US$220 million, to add eight planned 2,000L single-use bioreactors for late-phase and commercial biologics manufacturing. Lonza reported that the new Portsmouth assets were ramped up in 2024. AFT records the announcement-date US$220 million equivalent without recalculating exchange rates and records 0 jobs because no qualifying new permanent-job commitment was publicly confirmed; this does not imply the facility employs nobody. Separate Portsmouth expansions and other Lonza investments are excluded.

Why it matters

The pharmaceuticals context.

Pharmaceutical manufacturers are committing billions to new U.S. production capacity for active ingredients, injectable medicines, biologics and other high-demand treatments. North Carolina and Indiana remain major centers of investment, while new facilities are being planned across the South. The current project pipeline includes both large greenfield campuses and major expansions of established production sites.
