The South Yard Assembly Building is in use for Columbia-class final assembly. The Atlas floating dry dock arrived January 3, 2026; its commissioning has not been confirmed. AFT classifies the expansion as Operational on a partial-startup basis and does not assign an exact production-start date.

AFT records the $850 million Groton expansion: the manufacturing superstructure (South Yard Assembly Building) and new floating dry dock. Connecticut's May 2018 release described $852 million in capital investments; AFT uses Electric Boat's Groton-specific figure. The state's separate $20 million dredging allocation is not included. Electric Boat's 1,881-job workforce commitment applies company-wide and is not counted as facility jobs.

Why this project qualifies

With $850 million in facility-specific investment, this project clears AFT's $100 million investment threshold (AFT includes any project meeting $100 million in facility-specific investment OR 100 permanent operating jobs). It is also confirmed by official public sources and involves a physical manufacturing facility in the United States.

Why it matters

The shipbuilding context.

Shipbuilding tracks qualifying U.S. shipyards and facilities that build commercial or naval vessels, or manufacture major hull sections, modules, and components for them, including submarine work delivered to another yard for final assembly. These projects depend on waterfront sites, heavy-lift infrastructure, specialized suppliers, and large skilled-trades workforces such as welders, pipefitters, and electricians.
