Florence Gigafactory — Expansion Phase

Envision AESC announced a separately dated expansion of its Florence County battery-cell facility in December 2023. The additional commitment adds $810 million in investment and 450 new permanent jobs, with completion expected in 2026. South Carolina identifies the two phases together as a derived $1.62 billion / 1,620-job campus total; AFT deliberately records only this additional phase-specific commitment here to prevent double counting.

Why it matters

The battery manufacturing context.

Battery manufacturing has become one of the largest concentrations of new industrial investment in the United States. A network of cell plants is taking shape across the Midwest and Southeast, connecting automakers, battery producers, critical-material suppliers and energy-storage markets. Federal production incentives have accelerated that build-out, while the next test will be whether announced capacity converts into sustained domestic production.
