BlueScope

BlueScope approved a $700 million expansion of its North Star mini-mill in Delta, adding a third electric-arc furnace, a second caster and a shuttle furnace. The project increased annual steelmaking capacity by approximately 850,000 metric tons, added approximately 100 permanent jobs and began ramping production in August 2022.

Why it matters

The steel context.

American steelmakers are building a new generation of electric-arc-furnace mills alongside expanded sheet, plate, rebar and coating lines. Nucor, U.S. Steel, Cleveland-Cliffs, Steel Dynamics, CMC, BlueScope and Hyundai Steel are adding capacity for automakers, construction and grid infrastructure across the industrial Midwest, Southeast and Southwest.
