AstraZeneca's largest single manufacturing investment — a biopharmaceutical drug-substance campus at the Rivanna Futures site in northern Albemarle County near Charlottesville, Virginia, comprising a drug-substance facility for metabolic and weight-management products (oral GLP-1, baxdrostat, PCSK9; small molecules, peptides and oligonucleotides) and an antibody-drug-conjugate (ADC) oncology manufacturing facility. Initially announced July 21, 2025 at $4 billion, the scope was increased to $4.5 billion on October 9, 2025; AFT records the current $4.5 billion (the earlier $4 billion figure is superseded, not additive — the two are never summed). A groundbreaking ceremony was held October 9, 2025 and site-preparation/grading is underway on the 462-acre property, with vertical building construction scheduled to begin in early 2027 and full operation targeted by 2030. AFT records 600 direct permanent AstraZeneca jobs (scientists, engineers, process facilitators). Excluded: the approximately 3,000 construction and supporting jobs, the proposed $191.3 million Virginia special appropriation and other public incentives, and AstraZeneca's $50 billion U.S. manufacturing-and-R&D rollup and November 2024 $3.5 billion rollup, which are not counted as project capital.

The pharmaceuticals context.

Pharmaceutical manufacturers are committing billions to new U.S. production capacity for active ingredients, injectable medicines, biologics and other high-demand treatments. North Carolina and Indiana remain major centers of investment, while new facilities are being planned across the South. The current project pipeline includes both large greenfield campuses and major expansions of established production sites.
